Baixo Corgo
The western subregion receives greater Atlantic influence and generally more rainfall. Around Peso da Régua, vineyards, olive groves and settlements form a dense mosaic.
Cima Corgo
Around Pinhão, historic quintas occupy narrow valleys with rapidly changing exposures. Traditional terraces, patamares and vertical rows reveal different periods of Douro viticulture.
Douro Superior
Further east, conditions become hotter, drier and more continental. The landscape opens towards Spain, yet altitude, aspect and plant material remain essential.
Reading an estate profile
Distinguish the estate from its parcels, named places and bottlings. A wine bearing a quinta name does not necessarily represent one uniform terroir.
